Currently my dad was diagnosed with liver cancer.  Ever since he was diagnosed with this I haven't taken it that well.  Lately I have been thinking that I might have the same.  I poke myself on the side of my stomach thinking I have something there.  I have poked myself so much that I have bruises.  I am not eating that much and when I do I get nausea feelings or my stomach starts cramping.  I have diarhea and my mind is like taking over.  Has anyone ever felt this way.  I do not like to be like this.  Please help.

Dear Dr. Ronnie, well, I have this new problem that seems to be escalating!....I went to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago because I was having a problem with my "eyes".  All of a sudden I would get this zig zag pattern whirling around my eyes.  It lasted only for a couple of minutes, but it felt like an "eternity" and freaked me out!....He had told me if it happens again to close my eyes and relax.  Well, it happened again this morning and it freaked me out again!  I had skin cancer on the left side of my face and had mohs surgery there several years ago and I am always afralid that the doctor missed a cancer cell, etc..And, sometimes, I get these shooting little pains on the top of my head and that freaks me out..I don't know if it is "anxiety" but it certainly doesn't help me..This prevents me sometimes from going out during the day because I "scare myself" and then I am afraid to do anything for fear of it occurring outside my home...What if...it is something serious?  I, also, get tingling in my head sometimes and the thought of a "stroke" runs through my head....I try not to think this way, but thoses scarey thoughts run through my head and not being occupied by "employment", doesn't help!  Any suggestions?....I hope to speak with you soon and hope all is well!

I keep getting these stomach spasms whenever I have to go out. I never had this before I had panic attacks. They started when I had a stressful break-up with my boyfriend of 2 years. I'm still very anxious and get shaky when I think of dating again. How long does this usually last? Can your program teach me how to get over this horrible stomach anxiety? Please help. I am very unhappy.

Dear Dr. Freedman,

Wanted you to know this year was the first vacation I have gone on where I had didn't think about anxiety, dp or anything about my health. It was the greatest feeling of relief I have ever known. You taught me how to delete that part of my thinking and stop scaring myself about everything. It's like somehow I turned off the switch that always doubted myself and couldn't have a good time anywhere. I feel like I'm who I used to be before all the fears. Thanks again. You've helped me through the toughest time in my life. So worth the effort!

Love,

Diana

This only happens when you are away from home because you are fearful of what may occur. This small seed of doubt is actually enough to trigger these reactions.

Consciousness of breathing is also another factor. Contrary to belief, most anxious people are breath holders rather than over breathers. They tense up when under stress or tension and never able to achieve a full breath. This results in the feelings that you describe.

When one learns to loosen their mind and body, especially in the stomach area, they find they are able to achieve a full breath, relax and breathing returns to normal. Remember, our body reflects our thoughts. If a past experience causes you to feel fearful, your body tightens up, breathing is hampered and the uncomfortable feelings result.

You have much more power over this than you imagine.

Feel free to call for further information.

Best wishes,

A lot of these feelings are actually caused by overbreathing. When most people try deep breathing exercises they actually breathe in too much oxygen. Try doing this and see how it makes you feel-

Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 seconds
Breathe out through your mouth for a count of 6 to 8 seconds

do both slowly.

Let me know how you feel. Your heart rate should actually decrease and you will probably feel more relaxed.

Good luck!

-Tony

Its like a smothering sensation. Plenty of air goes in and out but I focus on it and its like I feel smothered. I have tried deep breathing but it still gets me. When I am not thinking about breathing I feel fine.

Sometimes I start paying attention to my breathing and then I feel like I cant get a satisfying breath so this throws me into panic. This especially happens when driving alone. Also sometimes at work when talking to customers, if I am talking a lot I get kinda light headed and think I may pass out. When I am at home I am fine and never feel this way. I have had other problems in the past with DP and DR but its like I overcame those and now I have this. I am a Christian and have been praying and others pray that i can overcome this fear. Thanks for any insight!

Dear Michele,
Thank you for your post. Once the "mystery" which is actually a very logical explanation of the depersonalization is understood AND the proper approach is taken, this sometimes stubborn anxiety symptom is easily overcome.

Take care and you have a great summer too.

Best wishes,
